Seattle, WA -- Aug 2, 2020

Mural Amphitheatre at Seattle Center, featuring a mosaic mural called the Horiuchi Mural by Seattle artist Paul Horiuchi, is an official City of Seattle landmark. The site and art piece were created for the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair. The 60-foot cycloramic mural wall consists of 54 panels and 160 color variations made out of Venetian glass. It was intended to invoke the natural beauty and colors of the Pacific Northwest. The region’s only mid-sized amphitheatre, with a capacity of 4,000 or more concertgoers, was built on a natural hillside, with the towering Space Needle as a backdrop. Mural Amphitheatre has served as the venue for numerous events over the years, from charitable walks and runs to the Pain in the Grass concert series of the 1990s. Alice In Chains played at the Amphitheatre on August 7, 1989, and Pearl Jam played its first outdoor concert there on August 23, 1991. Today, the large, grassy, tree-lined space provides the stage for all sorts of summertime activities, anchored by Northwest Folklife Festival and Bumbershoot at either end. Seattle Center Festál events including Festival Sundiata Polish Festival, BrasilFest and Live Aloha Hawaiian Cultural Festival make use of the area. KEXP & Seattle Center Concerts at the Mural launched there in August 2009 and would be continuing this month, along with Movies at the Mural, if it weren’t for the pandemic. During these quiet times, Mural Amphitheatre still offers a shady, pleasant place for a socially distanced picnic or Frisbee toss. Check back in 2021 for some continuing – and perhaps even some new – events. ... See MoreSee Less
