About the "Ballard Locks"

- One of Seattle's Top 10 Destinations for locals and visitors!

- Construction of the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks and Lake Washington Ship Canal was completed in 1917 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

- The Ballard Locks connect the waters of Lake Washington, Lake Union, and Salmon Bay to the Puget Sound, allowing commercial vessels to travel between these bodies.

- Maintains water level of Lake Washington and Lake Union, prevents mixing of salt water into the freshwater lakes, and moves boats between water levels.
