The Shelby Family of Ballard: Mark, Linda, Jordan & Kayla, are gems. They do neighborhood cleanups and have done a lot to help people experiencing homelessness. They once took a homeless man under their wing, providing him with rides to medical appts, assistance w/ DSHS paperwork, and housed him after a hospital stay. They loved him like family and grieve his early death, due in part to his homelessness. As a 4-5 year old, Jordan regularly cleaned up litter w/ “grabber tongs”. Now, at age 7, he has a biz taking garbage cans weekly to the curb for 13 neighbors. Jordan has always had a passion for “all things garbage” but he told me he’s sad about the “trash, trash, trash” strewn about the streets. The Shelbys are concerned about homelessness, public health, property crime, and the current state of Ballard (and Seattle as a whole.) They’re considering moving away. Our city can do so much better by its residents. We don’t want to lose those that contribute so much! ... See MoreSee Less

I loved learning about Facing Homelessness today, The Block Project is creating affordable units of housing for $85,000 per unit- that is less than a third of what typical affordable housing units cost in Seattle! The organization is deeply tied to the communities that it works with and is producing these amazing results on a shoe string budget. The city should put this organization on our insurance policy, should expedite their permits and should close their funding gap. The state should exempt these units from property taxes and this model should be expanded to other cities in Washington. Very innovative solutions at Facing Homelessness! ... See MoreSee Less
